Been Here Since: 1975. How Do I Know? I can still remember going to Northland Mall when it was first enclosed and going over to Windsor as a kid with my family to look back at the Detroit skyline after the Ren Cen had just been built. Funny how it’s always been fun to go to Windsor!
Here’s my story:
I’ll never forget my first day on the radio in Detroit. I was really nervous. I‘d been hired as the newest DJ on WHYT Power 96.3. Home of The Electrifying Mojo, Dog Man and a bunch of other wild and strange people.
Not only was it the biggest radio market I’d ever been on the air in, but I got to start with a live remote live from Cobo during the Auto show. Back in 1987, the Auto show was getting a lot of attention because Cobo was being rebuilt and they doubled the size of the show. Every radio station in town was “live from the Auto Show.” I’d have been happy to hide in the closet sized studio the station had back at the Fisher Building. But I soon realized how much fun you could have looking at all of the models …and the cars too!
Through the next seven years, I played top 40 music and competed with Dick Purtan and Jim Harper’s radio stations for the top ratings. Those days were a lot of fun. Lots of parties at all of the Detroit areas nightspots. If you grew up on the Eastside, I’ll bet you can remember Lipsticks and Pepper’s nightclubs. Then CJ Barrymore’s came along. I thought I was at Disneyland!
I used to live in Chesterfield Township so I can still remember lots of summer nights on my friend Tony’s nineteen foot Bay liner hanging out at around Metro beach. Nothing better then the Fish fly Festival out there every year. Lots of great Macomb County memories.
When I wasn’t on the air at 96.3, playing music in one of the clubs or hosting a TV show on Channel 2 or Channel 7, I was busy dj-ing weddings.
I started Michael J. Foxx Entertainment and helped plan hundreds of weddings all over the place while working with Brides To Be, a local Bridal show company. I had a lot of chicken dinners at Penna’s back in the 1990’s!
Gone Country:
In the summer of 1994, W4 Country called and asked if I’d consider making the move to 106.7 FM. Country was exploding. The crowds at Hoedown every year were getting bigger and bigger. The top 40 bars were changing names from Rafters to Diamondback and people were line dancing from Belleville to Pontiac. It didn’t take log to figure out how comfortable Tony Lama boots are with my jeans so I made the switch and I’ve been playing Country music every since.
I 've been married, divorced and re-married to the love of my life in 2001. Yep, she’s a Michigan girl too. Wouldn’t have it any other way. Cheryl and I have four kids. Zack is 15 and about to start driving. Yikes. Stephanie is 12 and I can’t believe that either. My two babies are not going to be babies much longer. Noah is 4 and Hope turns 2 this year! I’ve got my hands full.
So that brings me to 106.7 The Fox.
Boss man John emailed me the other day and asked if I’d be interested in doing a shift every Saturday from noon to 4 pm. So now I am back on a station that I left in 1999 and it feels great. Hope I get to catch up with you soon! Thanks for listening if you’re anywhere around Detroit or even up in Northern Michigan, now thanks to the internet!
Gotta love Foxspacelive.com... C-ya soon!
